Posted on October 11, 2011 by kibadesign

Now in its tenth year, Ananya festival has been one of the most prestigious classical dance festivals in Delhi. It is one of the few festivals that focus on group choreography in various classical styles against the backdrop of the historic heritage monument Purana Qila. The festival brings together classical dance connoisseurs from across the city and this year it has also expanded to global audience through live webcasts. The festival is organised by the Department of Art, Culture and Languages of the Government of Delhi and Seher in association with Sahitya Kala Parishad. “This year, the focus for Ananya is to get younger and newer faces to the festival,” said Sanjeev Bhargava, the festival director. This year, the festival featured Odissi by Aruna Mohanty and Orissa Dance Academy (Bhubaneswar), Vyjayanthi Kashi and Shambhavi Dance Ensemble (Bangalore), Vaswati Misra and Dhwani Group (Delhi), Priya Venkataraman and Group (Delhi) and an amalgam of dance forms by Parwati Dutta and Group (Aurangabad).

The following session opened up enquiries into the process of preparation for performance, music compositions for dance productions and the issues that arise in combined presentations of various dance forms. The opening piece of the concluding day was inspired by dhrupad compositions ‘Nirgeet’ and focused on intricate nritta aspects of different dance forms. Talking about her presentation—Sannidhi, an amalgam of seven classical dance forms, dancer-choreographer Parwati Dutta said, “The sacred waters are an important aspect of Indian culture and also symbolise the way our tradition flows and evolves. In this production the seven scared rivers—Ganga, Yamuna, Kaveri, Godavari, Saraswati, Narmada and Sindhu represent the seven Indian classical dance forms.”
